Oshmith Roy is a Chicago-area flutist and has been studying flute since the age of seven. A freshman at Prairie Ridge High School and the youngest Burkart Emerging Artist, he has proven himself at top competitions from a young age.
Oshmith has received the highest honors from many competitions. He has placed and won in the Chicago Flute Club Competition, earning third place in 2021 and winning the following year. In 2023 and 2024, he won honorable mention in the Encore Music Academy Concerto Competition. In 2025, he won the Encore Music Academy Concerto Competition, appearing soloist with them in their season finale, playing Moquet’s La Flute De Pan. Additionally, he won the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition as an eighth grader and, as a result, performed with them as the soloist. He was also the Grand Wind Winner of the O’Malley Foundation National Concerto Competition, the winner of the Wisconsin Flute Festival Soloist Competition, a first place winner in the Charleston International Music Competition where he was also named a Top 15 Exceptional Performer, first place in the American Protege International Winds and Brass Competition, and the Berlin Grand Prize Virtuoso Music Competition, through which he was invited to make his national and international debuts at Carnegie Hall as well as the Berliner Philharmonie Hall at just 15 years old, and was most recently accepted as a Fellow with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative.
As an ensemble player, he currently plays flute in the Encore Symphony Orchestra and is an active substitute in the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra. He has held principal flute and piccolo positions in the ILMEA Junior Band, Fox Valley Honors Band, and played flute in the ILMEA District 7 Senior Orchestra and the ILMEA All-State Senior Honors Band in his first year of eligibility. Outside of flute, Oshmith is state-ranked in Science Olympiad, runs track and field and cross country. He is also a national qualifier in horseback riding, and has also been classically trained in opera with voice lessons for almost a decade with Michelle Hackman. He thanks his parents for putting up with him and their endless support, as well as his teachers, Hideko Amano and Cynara Pierzina for their guidance over the years.
